Furigana are small kana characters placed above horizontal Japanese text or beside vertical text. They indicate how a kanji expression is pronounced. In digital typography this is often implemented with ruby annotations.

You will see furigana in children’s books, educational material, manga, names, uncommon kanji, and text designed for a broad audience. It can also clarify a special or creative reading that a dictionary rule would not predict.

Why furigana is valuable

Furigana lets learners read vocabulary before every kanji has been memorized. This keeps reading material linguistically interesting and allows grammar, comprehension, and rhythm to develop alongside character knowledge.

It also reduces dictionary friction. Seeing 経験 with けいけん immediately connects the written form, sound, and meaning during the first encounters.

How furigana becomes a crutch

Human attention follows the easiest available signal. If the kana is always present, the eyes can skip the kanji while the learner still feels that the word was read successfully.

The answer is not to ban furigana. Use progressive support:

• Show it for genuinely new words.
• Hide it for words already under review.
• Reveal it after an attempted reading.
• Keep it available in long passages where comprehension is the primary goal.

Smart furigana in practice

A useful interface can decide support item by item. Early-stage vocabulary receives a reading. Familiar vocabulary appears without one, while a tap or hover can reveal it. Incorrect reading attempts temporarily restore support and schedule another retrieval.

When reading outside a study app, try a first pass without looking up every word. Mark the few words that block the sentence, then return with furigana or a dictionary. This preserves both fluency and learning.
